Use various tools/methods to assist the student in determining a desired residential life beyond high school. Learn about person-centered planning. Prepare for tests that are required for obtaining a driver's license. Register to vote and learn about the election process. Register for the draft and learn about public service obligations/opportunities. Obtain assistance to complete tax return from reputable income tax offices. Explore insurance needs by meeting with licensed insurance producers. Learn about alternatives to guardianship such as supported decision making and power of attorney and estate planning. Learn about managing, maintaining, or performing simple repairs on a home and obtaining modifications or accommodations. Contact the Center for Independent Living for information/training to become more interdependent http://www.njsilc.org/ Learn about how to purchase or lease a car, maintain a vehicle, and obtain modifications as needed. Open a bank account, financial planning, investing, and manage finances, a budget, and paying bills. Apply for credit or debit cards and manage personal debts. Learn about eating in restaurants and getting take-out or delivery from restaurants in the community. Learn how to maintain personal health and manage current health issues by learning how to independently schedule a doctor's appointment. Meet with social worker or psychologists to discuss interpersonal skill development. Plan for vacations and leisure activities if there is an interest. Learn about consumer skills and citizen’s rights and responsibilities. Learn about the Americans with Disabilities Act, students' rights under IDEA and N.J.A.C. 6A:14, and how to join the Student Self-Advocacy Club. Learn how to contact the NJ Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired to obtain training on independent living skills and mobility.
